postheadericon Celebrate Friendship

"The language of friendship is not words but meanings."
- Henry David Thoreau

I had dinner with a dear friend last night. We sat for hours catching up on life, on love, on hopes and dreams, on faith, and on friendship. As I sat there with her, I was eternally grateful for friendship.

It is rare to have those friends who you can talk about anything and everything with even when you don't see each other as regularly as you would like. The friends who go deep with you, even when it's scary. The ones who are there to double your joys, and halve your sorrows. The ones who walk with you through the dark. The friends who don't feel the need to offer you advice every five seconds, but can just hold you in silence. The ones who know what you are thinking without you having to say a word.

And it is rare to find those friends who know everything there is to know about you, but love you anyway. Who know your deepest, darkest secrets, but don't treat you any differently. The friends who won't settle for anything less than the best for you. The ones who believe in your dreams, even when you forget. And the friends who know just the right thing to say at just the right time.

Sometimes the clarity of a friend's insight on your life is worth more than you can possibly express. At least for me, I can't look all that objectively at my own life. When I lose hope in my dreams, it's a friend who can tell me that she believes in it more than I realize. When I lose faith in how I'm following God's plan for me, it's a friend who gently reminds me that I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. And when I forget that I'm worth it, it's a friend who shows me how to see myself the way she does.

"My friend, if I could give you one thing,
I would wish for you the ability to see yourself as others see you.
Then you would realize what a truly special person you are."
- B.A. Billingsly

Friendship has got to be one of God's greatest and most wonderful gifts. My evening last night was perfect. There was so much said in the silences and the ease between us. The hours went by without me even realizing it and the conversation flowed easily. All we did was take time to have dinner and a face-to-face chat. But the gift of the evening extends far beyond that. More than I even realized, it was exactly what I needed.

So thank God for friends! Not that you have to listen to me, or take my advice, but I'm going to say it anyway. Celebrate your friends today. It will be just as good for you as it is for them! Now here are some lyrics from a song I was thinking about as I was writing tonight.

Kind & Generous
by Natalie Merchant

You've been so kind and generous
I don't know how you keep on giving
For your kindness, I'm in debt to you
For your selflessness, my admiration
And for everything you've done

You know I'm bound...
I'm bound to thank you for it

You've been so kind and generous
I don't know how you keep on giving
For your kindness, I'm in debt to you
And I never could have come this far without you
So for everything you've done

You know I'm bound...
I'm bound to thank you for it

I want to thank you
For so many gifts
You gave with love and tenderness
I want to thank you

I want to thank you
For your generosity
The love and the honesty
That you gave me

I want to thank you
Show my gratitude
My love and my respect for you
I want to thank you

I want to...
Thank you
