postheadericon Did God Get His Hands Dirty?

"So God created human beings in his own image.
In the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them."
- Genesis 1:27

Have you ever thought about creation? Like really thought about it? I've always pictured God up in Heaven as He created. Like he was kind of distant from it. God spoke, and it was created. Done deal.

I talked to a friend recently who told me that she had heard a pastor describe creation. He told her to picture God as actually getting his hands dirty. Forming man and woman in the mud. Laughing and having great fun while He was doing it. I absolutely LOVE this imagery! How cool to think that God was using His hands to form us?! Um, yeah. I think pretty cool! We know that we can do a lot with our own hands, and how many amazing things we can create with them. Maybe that's something that God passed on to us because He did it first.

So then yesterday, I was reading my Bible plan and was reading the creation story. As I read, I couldn't get that picture out of my head. And it just made me smile a whole lot.

"Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground.
He breathed the breath of life into the man's nostrils,
and the man became a living person."
- Genesis 2:7

It's like God gave Adam CPR to start his life. Haha. I think I always pictured it as a metaphoric thing, but to think that it might actually be literal just blows my mind.

I was sharing this with another friend and she questioned why it was important which way it happened. I suppose it's not at all important. But if thinking about God using his hands, playing in the mud, and creating us that way is helpful, or if it helps you see God as closer to you, then I say do it! It's the way I'm going to picture it from now on.

I've often thought about creation like this when I'm learning CPR ... funny how you can make something you hope to never have to use into a worship experience. Praise God that we can use imagination to make things "real" for us! God is so great!

So I've always loved the word "inspire," because it captures this whole CPR concept--God breathing life into something. (Side note: I am a HUGE etymology nerd and I love word origins, and this word used to be used only in religious contexts, meaning that inspiration was God breathing into us to make us alive.) I love that the meaning of this word has expanded to include a spark of creativity: we breathe him in, and he fills us with his spirit, and that flows out of us creatively. We are like God in that we are creative. He allows us to get our hands dirty, to play in the mud and make new things. And he inspires us in so many ways.
